Halloween is coming…

My favorite holiday, Halloween, is coming…I’ve seen kids already doing “trunk or treat” and running around in costumes at the older communities. Some of them are cute as buttons, some are really scary.

I remember (back in the day) the costumes came in a box that was stacked on the shelf and the mask could be seen through the clear plastic on the top of the box. They were also generic. They had a HUGE mask (considering they were going on a small kid head) and huge eye holes so you could see. However, the masks were HOT…all plastic and other than eyeholes..no airflow. There was a very thin elastic that went around your head but more often than not, it broke and you had to tie it to the hole on one side or another. Google boxed costumes 1975 (or in that range) and you’ll see what I mean. (or see below)

What a change from today’s costumes. Today’s costumes are far more scary and realistic in some cases.

This brings me to trick or treating. What’s the norm for ages for trick or treating? My eldest wanted to trick or treat into his 18th year. My middle wanted to go hang with friends more than getting all the candy she could. My youngest…well…I think the allure has run its course. I’ve heard he’s going to hang with his friends.

The story behind Halloween is summarized here on the history channel website. It’s kind of fascinating and following Halloween is All Saints Day or Day of the Dead and following that is All Souls Day.

To all who will be trick or treating or handing out candy….Happy Halloween!
